The BSS School visited the exhibition “Textiles of Bengal”
The students from class 8 of The BSS School visited the exhibition “Textiles of Bengal” curated by Weaver Studio Resource Centre at the Kolkata Centre for Creativity (KCC) on the 11th of March, 2025.
This initiative, showcasing Bengal’s rich textile traditions and their historical significance, addressed the critical need for preserving Bengal’s textile history, ensuring that the wisdom and craftsmanship of artisans are recorded and passed down.
The students were provided with a guided walkthrough by experts which offered them a unique opportunity to connect with Bengal’s textile heritage. Such an experience, invariably enhanced their understanding of the intricate relationship between caste, community, gender, trade, and tradition in shaping the crafts.
The exhibition offered a curated experience featuring muslins, kantha, jamdani, Indo-Portuguese & Kashmiri embroideries, and Haji rumals.
This walkthrough helped the students understand the unravelled history of Bengal’s textile, shaped by empires and shaping them in turn. From the opulence of Mughal patronage to the disruptions of British rule, they have evolved through shifting technologies, migration, trade, and artistic ingenuity. The land itself has left its mark—rivers altering their course, revolts like the Indigo Uprising staining the fabric of time—each thread carrying the weight of change and resilience.
